Robert A. Byrne Co. is headquartered in Modoc County California and has been operated by members of the Byrne family since the 1860s. Today, the ranch is managed by Mike, Bev, Matt and Brianna Byrne. Cows and calves on the ranch graze mountain meadows along with sagebrush and juniper country where solar-powered wells deliver water to cattle and wildlife during the high desert summer. In the winter, many of the cows are moved out of the high country snow to calve in the green hills of the northern Sacramento Valley. The ranch has been recognized for conservation leadership in the past by the National Resources Conservation Service and the Society for Range Management and continues to develop partnerships with land managers and conservation groups to improve biodiversity and habitat for migrating waterfowl and other species.

The family developed a natural and hormone-free herd in the 1980s and more recently received certification for humane animal handling and organic production. The Byrne family markets steers and heifers through Western Video Market and is one of the founding families of SunFed beef, a California-based, grass-fed and organic beef company.
